Analysing and reporting on the state of HIV/AIDS service provision

The Foundation for Professional Development (FPD) is a South African Private Institution of Higher Education focussing on promoting action research, clinical research and research on educational practice. The Compass project includes mapping of all HIV/AIDS service providers within provinces/municipalities, including information on their services, as well as quantification of the service delivery and need.

In 2007 and 2008 FPD published a report on the state of HIV/AIDS service provision in the City of Tshwane. In 2009 FPD indicated that there was a need to review certain aspects of the project to ensure academic integrity of the outputs. Epi Result was asked to review the methods for estimating indicators for health care need for HIV/AIDS and to update the data collection tool. In addition, using data from various sources (e.g. Statistics South Africa, National Department of Health) the need for antiretroviral treatment (ART), voluntary counselling and testing (VCT), prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) and orphan care were calculated for the City of Tshwane and a similar project in the Northern Cape Province. Furthermore, the final reports of these studies were critically edited.

In 2010 Epi Result will even have a larger role in the City of Tshwane project. In addition to the mentioned activities, support during the data management proces (data verification/quality assurance) will be provided. Furthermore, all analyses of the data collected by FDP will be conducted and the results written up in both a report and a journal publication.
