Support the development of an applied epidemiology course
I am currently supporting I-TECH South Africa and the University of Washington with the development of an applied epidemiology distance learning course. One of the main tasks it to provide technical expertise related to the South African clinical and epidemiology contexts.
Bringing in epidemiological expertise in proposals
HEARD conducts a range of research on interventions to reduce the HIV pandemic. The division has staff members with various areas of expertise, but they do not have an epidemiologist although they are sometimes in need of epidemiological assistance.
Online teaching materials
Although most of the lecturing in public health in South-Africa still takes place during face-to-face contact, online teaching becomes more and more important. For the Centre for Evidence-based Health Care (CEBHC) at Stellenbosch University I developed online learning packages.
Analysis of HIV epidemics and country responses
For countries it is important to know what the status of the HIV epidemic is, what the size of the health care response is, and if the latter has had an effect on the trends in the burden of disease. Based on this priorities can be given to particular areas, strategic plans may be refocused, and certain efforts intensified. In the past year I have conducted two epidemic and impact analyses, one for South Africa and one for Nepal, for the respective WHO country offices.
Forecasting the burden of disease
For pharmaceutical companies it is important to know how patient-populations for different diseases develop in the future. Datamonitor Healthcare develops reports including patient-based forecasts for both developed and emerging countries, but also background to diseases in order to explain the results. Since 2013 I am part of their epidemiology team that develops these reports.
Member of the scientific committee of a study on the health of refugees
The Department of Public Health, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, has conducted a study on the health (care use) of refugees. I was part of the scientific committee that advised the investigators during the different phases of the study.
