Providing extra capacity for reviewing data and writing up
Health Systems Trust (HST) is a dynamic not-for-profit organisation supporting the transformation of the health system in South Africa. Subscribing to a primary health care approach, HST actively supports current and future development of a comprehensive health system, through strategies designed to promote equity and efficiency in health and health care delivery in southern Africa.
Baseline health assessment for an ESHIA project
As part of an Health Impact Assessment (HIA) project in Angola, a health baseline study needed to be conducted. Angola Resources Consultants (ARC) outsourced the desk-based research to Epi Result. This article discusses the steps that were taken in order to come to a final report on the baseline health status of the community in the region.
Workshop Introduction to Epidemiology in Health Economics
As part of the ISPOR conference, I gave a workshop on epidemiology. This focused on the uses of epidemiology in general, and in public health and health economics. The different study designs, especially those used in health economic studies, were discussed, as well as the different measures of frequency and association. The attendees completed exercises and case studies were discussed.
Public Health website and newsletter
The Public Health Association of South Africa (PHASA) was looking for an effective communication strategy. Together with Epi Result a new website was developed, and this is kept up-to-date with public health news, job opportunities and PHASA news on a weekly fases. Futhermore, Epi Result is doing the editing for the quarterly electronic newsletter which contains articles on public health issues written by invited authors.
Analysing and reporting the community service experiences of doctors and dentists
Africa Health Placements (AHP) has conducted an exit survey among the 2009 cohort of community service doctors and dentists. Epi Result was asked to do the actual analyses and write the report, which included a literature review on the experiences of community services officers in South Africa.
Assessing the quality of standard treatment guidelines
The Cochrane Collaboration assisted the Southern African Regional Programme on Access to Medicines and Diagnostics with an Inventory of Standard Treatment Guidelines. For this project, guidelines from SADC countries on e.g. HIV, malaria, hypertension and diarrhea needed to be assessed on their methodologicalquality using the AGREE II instrument. Epi Result assisted with this, being one of the two reviewers.
