South Africa’s Census 2011

In October the Census 2011 was conducted in South Africa by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), the national statistics agency. It is not solely counting how many people live in the country, but information is also collected on gender, age, education, living conditions, access to basic services etc.

As a regular user of the data of StatsSA (Census 2001, Community Survey 2007, Mid-year population estimates) I found it very interesting to now be a participant as I recognized a lot of the questions and the answer options. I have for example used information on the socio-demographics characteristics of the population of the Eastern Cape as part of a project on improving primary health care in the province (Foundation for Professional Development). Furthermore, I use the extrapolations of the census data (mid-year population estimates) for the annual report on the HIV/AIDS service provision for Tshwane municipality, in order to do calculate the need estimates (Foundation for Professional Development) .

So I am looking forward to the new data becoming available, although this is expected to be only in 2013.
