Malaria in South Africa
Incidence decreasing in Limpopo Province
This descriptive study gives an overview of the malaria incidence and mortality in Limpopo Province, South Africa, for the seasons 1998-1999 to 2006-2007. It used routinely collected data on diagnosed malaria cases and deaths from the provincial malaria information system, together with population estimates from Statistics South Africa. The study focuses on reported malaria cases (numbers, incidence rates) and deaths (numbers, case-fatality rates for the whole province, and by sex, age and district). In the study period there was a decreasing trend in the incidence rate. Information from this study may serve as baseline data to determine the course and distribution of malaria in Limpopo province over time.
