Zimbabweans in Louis Trichardt at high risk of diarrhoea

In the April 2011 issue of the South African Medical Journal a scientific letter was published showing that the conditions under which Zimbabwean immigrants live in Louis Trichardt put them at high risk of diarrhoea. I co-authored the article and it is based on the Master of Public Health thesis of Thando Gwetu, one of the students that I supervised while working at the University of Venda. In total 110 Zimbabweans were interviewed to assess the prevalence and risk factors for diarrhoea. 24.5% of them indicated to have had diarrhoea in the past 2 weeks.

The Public Health Association of South Africa (PHASA) represents the interests of the public health community in South Africa. In order to achieve its objectives PHASA was looking for an effective communication strategy. Together with Epi Result a new website was developed, and Epi Result is responsible to keep this website up-to-date with public health news, events and conferences, job opportunities and PHASA news on a weekly bases. Futhermore, Epi Result is doing the editing for the quarterly electronic newsletter which contains e.g. interesting articles on public health issues written by invited authors.

Methods: Focus Group Discussions a step by step guide

Although epidemiology is more focussed on quantitative research (quantity numbers), qualitative research (quality insight) can be important to supplement this. A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) is a qualitative research technique consisting of a structured discussion and used to obtain in depth information from a group of people about a particular topic. Epi Result has recently developed a guide which provides the user with an overview of the steps required to conduct a FGD (including the resources required) and instructions about what you do with the information when you have completed the FGDs.
