Conducting a workshop on Introduction to Epidemiology in Health Economics during the 3rd annual ISPOR SA conference. The different study designs were discussed and illustrated by examples of their use in health economics studies. Furthermore, the different measures of frequency and association were presented, explained and illustrated by examples. Throughout the workshop exercises were done and case studies discussed in order to enhance the learning of the participants.

4 and 5 August 2010 I have been teaching epidemiological study designs to MSc and MPH students at the School of Health Systems and Public Health at the University of Pretoria. I gave several lectures on the theory and on examples of studies, and we did two case studies using the Problem-Based Learning approach.

Teaching epidemiological study designs to MSc and MPH students: lectures on the theory and on examples of studies, discussion of exercises and of two case studies using the Problem-Based Learning approach. Discussed were the principles, advantages and disadvantages of cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort studies (both prospective and retrospective), hybrid designs (nested case-control study, case-cohort study), and randomised controlled trials.

Already since the end of 2007 I have been assisting the School of Health Systems and Public Health of the University of Pretoria. The services that I provide relate to both teaching (a 2-day workshop on epidemiological study designs), as well as being an external examinator for exams, proposals and dissertations.
