Advanced biostatistics
This 8-day more advanced course equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to allow interpretation and critical understanding of analysis of epidemiological data.
This is done by analyzing data in SPSS and familiarizing participants with:
- Descriptive statistics: type of data, frequency, distribution, histograms, symmetry and skewness, median, mean, interquartile range, standard deviation
- Estimation, standard error and confidence intervals: Normal distribution, sampling variation, standard error, confidence intervals
- Significance tests: principles of significance tests, hypotheses, types of error, presenting P values, multiple testing
- Comparing means: t-test, paired t-test, checking assumptions, Normal plot, deviations from assumptions
- Preparing to analyze data: coding, entry, cleaning and checking
- Data-management in SPSS: reading a raw data file, cross-tabulation and recode, using compute to create new variables, conditional computes: the IF comment, selecting and sampling cases, numerical and graphical summaries of data
- Analyses for qualitative data: chi-square test, Fishers exact test, RR, OR
- Correlation and regression: correlation coefficient, simple linear regression cross- tabulation
